Hen of the Wood-Waterbury
What's All the Fuss About?
Reviewed by BigEater on May 16, 2012
Let me start by saying that we found the food at Hen of the Wood to be good. Unfortunately, it wasn't as spectacular as we were led to believe it would be, both by the reviews and by some others who had been there. The service was really very good, but too formal for my taste. We were put off by the sales pitch we got about how great the place was and how wonderful it was that Hen of the Wood uses in-season local produce (a lot of Vermont restaurants do that). For the price we found the entrees pretty typical and quite meager in the amount provided. My hanger steak wasn't nearly as tender as I've had elsewhere. Our appetizers were good, specially the roasted beet "bite" but the sausage appetizer's taste was adversely effected by the egg plopped in the middle of it and the small deep container which was hard to eat from. We had to continually ask for bread to be provided (two pieces at a time). We can think of 5 Vermont restaurants we would return to long before we'd go back to Hen of the Wood. The menus at these other restaurants are at least as innovative, the portions far larger with a better choice of side dishes and salad. To say the least, we were underwhelmed. Plus the parking lot was really muddy on a rainy night.
