Shalimar of India
Don't honor Entertainment Guide Coupons
Reviewed by rob mongeon on October 31, 2006
I've been doing brunch there for years and it is as good if not better than India House but as others have pointed out -- this is Vermont and not Montreal or NYC. However, two days ago I ordered a take out meal with a coupon from the Entertainment Guide. The coupon was for 50% off a meal or buy one/get one for free. I read the menu and understood I was ordering a dinner because it was past 5pm. They would have charged me $12 for the meal. That's cool, so I ordered it, knowing it would be $6 plus taxes + grats. I got there, handed them the coupon and they told me it was for "dine in only". I explained to them that the dine in price was the same as the take out price and I couldn't understand the logic in their decision as to not honor the coupon. I told them "I don't understand the difference if I sit down and eat it now or take it home with me. Either way, your getting the same payment! After explaining this 3 times I moved on, went to City Market's lunch bar and went home with take out plus a beer for the same price that I would have paid for the discounted dinner at Shalimar! I sure hope they got the $12 for the cold tandoori grill they most likely brought home!

Great low cost pub food
Reviewed by rob mongeon on May 3, 2006
This is one of Burlington's best pub values. I had a special of the day 8 inch shaved steak sub with deep fried jalapenos and a pile of beer battered fries. I could not finish this monster and at $6 it was quite the value. They keep the prices low to encourage beer buying patrons so it's an expecially great value for lunch if you're not drinking. Most items on the menu are $4.50 to 6.00 and I think the highest price I saw was like $7.50. All-in-all, great value!

Friendly but no value here

After reading an article in a local newspaper I decided to get take out at this place. I ordered "the meal of the day" and it was Goat Stew. Although very flovorful the portions were small. The meal consisted of 2 ribs of lamb, 1 cup of white rice and 1/2 cup of "stew". 2 of these meals would have been over $17 but I had a $5 coupon. The actual cost to produce the meals I estimate at about $5 for both with the main cost being the meat. Needless to say, I won't be going there again.

Koto Restaurant
Great habachi show
Reviewed by rob mongeon on February 13, 2006
Koto is a good choice if you like Japanese food and have kids who do as well. They do a pretty acrobatic habachi grill complete with the flaming volcano of onion and the tossing of food into your mouth from the grill. They also do a really good sushi and sashimi as well as bento boxes filled with small delicacies like tempuru, grilled vegetables and various dim sum. It may be a little pricy for what you get but the atmosphere and service make up for that.

Penny Cluse Café
Best breakfast in B-town
Reviewed by rob mongeon on February 10, 2006
We just had lunch at Penny Cluse and were very impressed. I had the fish taco served with avacodo salsa, salsa fresco, shredded radish, black beans and a side of andouille sausage. You could tell it was made fresh which is amazing because it only took us about 10 minutes to be served. I've had breakfast there before and experienced the same thing. The 2 flagships of their menu are a must: Zydaco omlette and a side of biscuit with herbed gravy. For $9 you can't go wrong. My only complaint is the fact that they don't do dinner.

PK Café
Average college fare
Reviewed by rob mongeon on January 3, 2006
I've only been for the pizza although their other fare looks appetizing. The pizza is about average, nothing to brag about. This is the typical college alternate campus cafeteria. Slightly better then the campus kitchen.
