a bottle of wine on the patio...
Reviewed by debunker on July 8, 2008
Very relaxing, and the wine list (although priced as if it were to accompany fine-dining) is filled with very unique and interesting choices. The wine goes very nicely with the bread basket from Labrioche. Avoid everything else. The entrees are little more than a roll-call of the ingredients listed on the menu. Be warned that the "steak" is actually sliced beef. The burger, while delivering an all new price-point is not good. Salads were not properly stored/prepared, and the dressings were so amateurish that you could identify every herb and ingredient. I think it is a good idea to let the first year students run the restaurant, but not at these bizarre prices!

Nectar's
Hard to criticize free food...
Reviewed by debunker on April 23, 2008
...but this cannot really be called barbecue. Big Fatty at least takes some pride in the cooking & presentation of the meat. I don't know why Nectar's thinks they can produce edible bbq(?) Were the ribs boiled and baked and then grilled? This was college-kid food... vast quantities of low grade meat extremely overcooked and dried out. "Brisket" was actually pot roast. Ribs were edible, but overcooked, oversauced, and uninspired. Sides were all wrong. I think there is a basic misunderstanding around here as to what would constitute decent bbq. Somebody got this tremendous brainstorm that all you need to do is cook up a massive batch of meat, then serve it over the course of a week swimming in sweet and tangy sauce. No Thanks! I'll take MINE right off the grill... and before it gets overdone.

Cider House Barbecue and Pub, The
some improvements, some decline

I rated this place as having great potential when it first opened... and now have finally returned. The first & foremost thing I noticed is that the lighting and decor is about 1,000,000 percent improved! The level of comfort in the bar & the music room was just wonderful. The booths still look like they could use some attention. But the food has slipped bigtime. It is almost like they lost their chef? No more greens (best thing they did) and the fish was not really acceptable (dry & overcooked). The ribs were way overcooked, and even served up burnt. The massively sugared "bourbon" sauce barely covered-up the charred flavor. The salad is a joke at $6. Not even chilled... the poor little thing was pathetic & the dressings seemed like they came from a jar. The fries and coleslaw and potato salad were fine. Re: Wines: they had a great Malbec the first time we went... now they only have one italian red on an unimaginative and rather boring short list. I hope that this place regroups and puts some attention on the food this round.

A Real Enjoyable Restaurant!

Nowadays it often seems like most restaurants just want you in & out so they can count another meal in the tally. It is wonderful to find a place where the food is offered with pride & humility, and is wonderful in so many ways. We thought our server was just great... attentive and informative (she suggested we order the red salsa with our meal, and we won't ever forget to do that again!). The quesadilla made me forget any quesadilla I have ever had before, and the salads & fish tacos just speak for themselves. The red rice is light and fresh-tasting. I don't get to B-town as much as I used to, but when I do lately this is the only food I am thinking of.
