Pho Dang Vietnamese Café -- Winooski
The best of 'em all

I ordered a bowl of pho and didn't add anything except the sprouts & basil and it was simply perfect in every way. All the other places do some interesting things... but until I came back to Pho dang I really was starting to hate Pho.

You taste bad cheap oil and cheap cheese, in salty tomato paste. ...and you can taste it for hours after you eat it. Aside from that I guess it's great.

VERY ENJOYABLE!

Tried it for the first time, for lunch and got great coffee, and an awesome Philly Cheese steak. Lots of fresh and crunchy veggies in the salad, fries were PERFECT. At the table the BLT and the fish tacos looked so good I want to go back to try them. OK--not haute cuisine, but they know how to do what they do RIGHT... and keep it way fun. Love the menu and the wait staff's attitude.

How had I not heard of this place? It is huge... and with self-serve iced coffee and tea, delicious salads and healthful large sandwiches on amazingly great bread... it is a lunch dream palace. Now I am hooked, and will soon try the new place on Flynn Ave. My biggest issue with the place is how invisible it is.

at what point does bbq become too toney?

I thought the ribs were pretty good, but they were FAR from ideal. They tended too much towards getting hammy from being too "sous vide"... I mean slow cooking is great, but too slow messes with the taste and texture. The only reason I can see why this bbq would win awards is that it is very different, but gimme a straight-ahead KC or Memphis rack, done correctly, anyday. Thought the sides were overpriced and nothing special... and the ambiance was a bit self-conscious.

Elixir Restaurant
not good...
Reviewed by debunker on August 17, 2011
great looking place, lovely hosts, high end attitude, expensive wine... too bad the food was all overwrought, overcooked, oversauced, and pretty much worthless. I had their specialty... braised short ribs. Tomato sauce?, little flavor, and the stuff was basically stringy pot roast. Mussel app was just passable. They don't know how to cook & present rice and the pasta was overcooked. Service was fast, but probably only because all the food was prepared in advance. All in all, I felt ripped off and could have had a better meal almost anywhere. Others seemed to be enjoying something... but we lost interest in the place.
