Paradise Burritos
Not worth the time it took.
Reviewed by Cat Woodward Sergeant on August 16, 2006
Bland, unappealing food served by scruffy young men wearing dirty clothes that looked like they had slept in them the night before.

Uncommon Grounds
Get it to go.

If I had one coffee-shop wish, it would be that Uncommon Grounds and Muddy's would join forces. Uncommon Grounds could supply the delicious brews for which they are known and Muddy's could supply the atmosphere I love without UG's weird, sometimes overpowering raw coffee bean smell and lack of comfy chairs. That said, Uncommon Grounds does have the best coffee in town, all fair trade and roasted on the premises. Likewise, their chai tea is perfectly brewed and lightly sweetened and their fresh lemonade is a wonderful summertime treat.

Muddy Waters
Great ambience, foul concoctions

Uncommon Grounds could supply the delicious brews for which they are known and Muddy's could supply the atmosphere I love without UG's weird, sometimes overpowering raw coffee bean smell. The only palatable brew I've found thus far at Muddy's is their apple cider - which happens to come from a gallon jug of the same sort you can buy at any grocery store. That said, I love their decorating and environment, it's like being inside a secret, upscale treehouse, complete with art on the walls. My only decorating complaint is that the stuffed, comfy chairs are always taken.

Mirabelles
The true breakfast of champions
Reviewed by Cat Woodward Sergeant on August 16, 2006
Three fluffy eggs, scrambled with milk; French toast made from a baguette and sprinkled with powdered sugar; lightly toasted, non-greasy hash browns; three strips of bacon; and a side of fruit. Sound good? It is. Giant portions of delicious, high quality French food makes for a heavenly brunch which can feed two or gorge one. I go to Mirabelle's for Saturday brunch whenever the line is not out the front door. With so much demand on Saturdays mornings, why not open for Sunday brunch? (edit: Apparently they caught on, Mirabelle's is now open Sundays as well.)

Henry's Diner
Cheap, Fast, & Delish
Reviewed by Cat Woodward Sergeant on August 16, 2006
As a transplant to VT from a family of Southerners, I crave certain foods that aren't embraced in the North. I had no trouble finding good sweet potato fries in Burlington, but found a distinct lack of cooks who know how to make biscuits & gravy or grits. As poutine is a sad substitute for B&G, I was excited to find a place that serves biscuits & gravy the way my Daddy used to make them! Not only does Henry's have this delectable dish, they also serve breakfast all day, so sleeping late and still eating breakfast foods is once again a possibility. The service is fast, (breakfast generally arrives within 5-10 minutes), cordial, and the prices aren't bad either - a breakfast can be had as cheap as $3. I've become a Saturday morning regular and would go even more often if they made good grits instead of hash browns.

Coyotes Tex-Mex Café
Come thirsty, not hungry
Reviewed by Cat Woodward Sergeant on August 16, 2006
As a regular for margaritas here, I can tell you, you won't find margaritas this big, tasty, & cheap anywhere else in Burlington. Thirsty Thursday is $2.50 margarita night so Coyote's is a great place to pregame for the weekend. That said, their food is average. The chicken enchiladas were good and smothered in cheese, but not especially noteworthy. The cornbread is delicious. Their salsa is a little off - it has a tinny taste like it's started to spoil or has been sitting in an open can too long.
