Junior's Downtown
Eh

The pizza here is fine, and coming in for a slice, also fine. The pasta was smooshy and bleah. They put loads of cheese on the garlic toast with cheese, but less garlic than I'd like. The service was fine. The kids behind the counter were polite and reasonably efficient. Still, this place isn't at all like their Colchester location. If you want a decent pasta dish, go there instead. Go here if you're just looking for a slice or a pie before a show or something.

Dairy Creme
Creemee stand and a bit more
Reviewed by Morganna on February 9, 2013
They have serviceable hot dogs and other snack bar fare. You come for the creemees, though. They are the best in the area. Great price for a good product. They have varying flavors and have mixins so they can make other flavors for you. They also have lactose free flavors each day. Worth a little trip out of downtown.

Cornerstone Pub & Kitchen
Great addition to Barre

I had the lobster mac and cheese special. My husband had a cornerstone burger (so did another guest), two people had the chicken wings, and the last had a dinner salad. ALL of it was fresh, well prepared, and tasty. The lobster mac and cheese was FANTASTIC. We also shared the poutine and that was brilliantly yummy, as well. Though, my husband's fries were a little uneven, some were small and over-fried. He also said that his burger was good, but didn't seem much more good than the burger we'd had at Ladder 1. The mac and cheese I had was the best I'd had anywhere in Vermont, so YUM. The service on a busy saturday night was welcoming and pleasant without being intrusive or annoying. Food came out at a good pace. Considering that the staff were on the older high school/college age end of things, it all indicated a very well-run front of house. I recommend getting a group of 5 or more friends and making a reservation, it's packed a lot of the time! though if you give them a call about an hour before you arrive, they'll try to hold a table for you.

Mad Taco, The — Montpelier
Go, go now, stop what you're doing and GO
Reviewed by Morganna on February 17, 2012
Mad Taco in Montpelier has finally opened. We stopped on Tuesday night after work and got an order of carnitas, colorado, and pastor tacos. All were pork with just a few different things. All were $8 (two tacos in each order). We also got a side of refried beans ($3). They have an array of like 14 sauces on the counter that you can take with you and they're mostly pretty hot, but very very tasty. We shared everything, and I loved it all. The colorado tacos had avocado on them and the meat was cooked in their colorado sauce, otherwise the tacos come with pork (a good amount of it) and onion (I ask for no cilantro, otherwise it looks like they put cilantro on everything). If you want queso or crema, that's extra. Each taco is made with two corn tortillas (I don't think they make their own but I could be wrong I didn't ask) so they stay together with no problem. I loved it. Enough that I brought home more last night. He remembered me when I came in, and they were hoppin' busy. I saw tacos lengua on the board last night ($11 for two) and got those as well as carnitas and colorado, also a side of beans, again. Total was around $32 last night. Fortunately my husband was feeling much better last night and was able to taste the tacos and try several of the sauces. He wasn't sure if they were too hot because his throat was still sore or because he didn't have anything (queso or crema) to help modify the heat, but he didn't really use them. He also loved them, though. We are in serious trouble. This place is just down the road from my husband's office. :) The pork was fabulous (though very greasy on the carnitas tacos, I didn't mind the dribbly grease one bit). It was well-cooked and lightly seasoned with a wonderful mouth-feel. The lengua tacos were brilliant, tender, flavorful, just... yum. For those of you who have been longing for a good Mexican place in the area, you got it. Get thee to Mad Taco, NOW NOW NOW! :)

Don Pedro's Authentic Mexican Taqueria
Good tasty Mexican food, reasonable prices
Reviewed by Morganna on October 18, 2011
We ate an early dinner here about two or three weeks after they'd opened. We ordered large plates, and were impressed with the quantity of the food, as well as the quality. We love Mexican and Tex Mex food, and have often opined about there not being a good, inexpensive place that doesn't take forever to have a dinner at. This fills that spot. This is not fine dining, the vibe is not fancy. This is good food, done pretty quickly, in a somewhat chaotic but cheerful atmosphere. The meats are authentically- and well- cooked. We had pork and beef. Both were delicious, tender, and not at all dry. The salsas were fresh and delightful. If we lived closer (we live an hour away) we'd probably eat here at least once a week, and we NEVER do that (we only eat out a couple times a month, usually).

Salt
Give them a try! Report back to us!

I had a chance to stop in at Salt in Montpelier yesterday afternoon while I was out doing errands between appointments. I didn't have enough money to buy anything other than their homemade s'more from their dessert menu, but I -loved- the s'more. Homemade graham cracker and marshmallow, and they made their ganache for the chocolate. It was just wonderful. The menu looks fantastic, and Suzanne is working on a holiday menu with and English bent to it. I met both her and her husband, and they were delightful. I can't help but adore a chef who mutters to his salamander. :) Please please give 'em a go. I can't afford to keep them open myself, and I'm being totally selfish. Entree prices ranged from $13 to $24 and the small plates (which all looked fabulous to me) were from, IIRC $7 to $10. They also offer a local cheese plate that looks wonderful. It's a small, intimate space (the small number of seats is the primary reason for the 4 in ambiance), and a tiny bit difficult to find on Barre Street, in Montpelier, but I think it's probably going to be well worth hunting them down. :)
