A Single Pebble
so disappointing!
Reviewed by unholylies on September 27, 2009
i like coming here on occasions when i feel like spending a little more money on food than usual, but my last experience at a single pebble basically ruined this restaurant for me. my two friends and i came on a tuesday expecting it not to be crowded, but boy were we wrong. the appetizers came out relatively quickly for the large amount of people in the restaurant, but our entrees took nearly an hour to get to us (by which point my party was more annoyed than hungry). ridiculous. if i ever come here again, it's going to be for takeout only. the tangerine peel "chicken" is great, but the five flavored tofu that we waited over an hour for was really gross. i'd also pass on the scallion pancakes, as they're consistently oversalted and oily.

i really wanted to like this restaurant

but i found its food to be extremely bland. in fact, i remember remarking to my boyfriend, "food like this is the reason people think vegan food sucks" ... which is harsh, but the truth. i really wanted to like this place, as the hot bar offerings seemed promising, but almost all of them lacked any sort of flavor at all. it's like this place has never been introduced to salt or spices of any kind. maybe i came on an off day, but as i live in burlington i'm not sure i'll be coming again. disappointing!

I'm surprised that nobody has commented on this new location. The food is just as good, and although farther away from me (I used to live basically across the street from their N. Winooski restaurant), I still love to go here. The place is way bigger now, and can sometimes get really crowded. Their vegan beans & rice burrito is so good and fresh. I'd go here every day if I could...yum!

I like the sandwiches a lot (and the fact that you can make your own), but I sometimes feel like the employees (one in particular) are cranky and that I'm bothering them by ordering. Most of them are really nice, actually, but there's one person who I always dread ordering from because she seems bothered and rushes me to make my sandwich. Annoying. The coffee is good, but again, kind of awkward to go in here and feel like a burden on the people who are supposed to be serving you. Also, I'm pretty sure they're not open on Saturdays.

I have to agree with the review below me... I had high hopes for this place as well, but being vegan is apparently really difficult for the owners/cooks here to grasp. They were also kind of snide about it as well when I asked about vegan options. There don't seem to be any outright, so I guess if you want a vegan sandwich here you have to go through a bit of trouble. I wouldn't go back.

So good (though expensive)

I looove this place, and was so glad when my parents decided to go one day. Since then I've come here a dozen times. The tofu & lemongrass dish is sooo good, as are their spring rolls. They're smaller (you get 6!) and so much more delicious than all the other spring rolls I've had in Burlington. Their cocktails are strong, too, if you're into that. I definitely recommend this place (though it can be pricey if you go for lunch, as they only have one menu).
