Good Classic Bar Food
Reviewed by AINTNUTTINBUTAGTHANG on May 20, 2010
Who doesn't love Nectars gravy fries? Or a good heary open-faced Turkey Sandwich with fries. Or goey, sticky BBQ wings and more fries! As a previously converted meat-eater (veggie for 4years), I have to give kudos to their fresh mesculin mix side salad. You order side salad here, dont count on a small pile of boring iceburg, pastey tomatoes, with stinky white onions. This side salad is the real deal. And did you know they offer KOMBUCHA on tap? Sometimes I swing through to listen to music and simply drink a Kombucha. My only complaint is that the fries, wings and turkey gravy tend to be oversalted. But that does not stop me! Mm-m-m!

Good New Menu
Reviewed by VTFoodLvr on April 20, 2009
I ate here right after they converted it. I was surprised by the quality of the food. While not a knock out, it was still pretty good. I had the BBQ brisket sliders and they were great! The ambience is MUCH better than it was before, more of a restaurant than a college hangout. Its nice to see they still have their late night widow open though.

New Menu Needs a Few Tweaks
Reviewed by Cat Woodward Sergeant on May 18, 2008
I went to the Bite Club event at Nectar's and spent it hoping they hadn't completely gotten rid of their old menu. A lot of things had great potential, but needed some tweaks. For instance, the baked beans were fresh and tasty, but undercooked. The pulled pork sandwiches were my favorite, but I would like to see squeezy bottles of BBQ sauce on the tables as the sauce use was minimal and I like my BBQ dripping! The beef sliders, on the other hand, were overcooked to the point that I wondered if more sauce could save them. The potato salad, macaroni salad, and the slaw boasted fresh ingredients, but very little seasoning. My friends complained that the fried pickles were too salty, but I liked them a lot - great drunk food! I'm not a ribs fan in general, but my friends assured me they were great. Toward the end of the event, we saw a bbq chicken table away from the other food and split a couple pieces. The taste was bland, mild, and didn't permeate the meat, but the slight aftertaste of kerosene or some other cooking fuel certainly did. We immediately dove into the pies to wipe the taste from our mouths. I'm a chocoholic, so I took a big bite of the mud-pie, only to warn my friends away from eating the rest of it as it was nothing more than chocolate pudding with marshmallow fluff. The maple pecan was overwhelmingly sweet (grocery store caliber). The maple buttermilk pie was definitely the best - sweet, but not cloying. All in all, it was ok, but when I go back, I'll go for the gravy fries, not the bbq.

Trivia night is the best!
Reviewed by DrMags2010 on May 11, 2008
I go to trivia on Thursdays at 7:30 quite often. It's a lot of fun!!! :) The menu is alright...my favorite is the chicken tenders. The recent renovations are pretty nice, too.

I love barbacue

Well the bite club does it again. A great evening with interesting food. This time it was as much as you could eat. Ribs, pulled pork, chicken and steak. Chicken on the bone, corn bread, fried pickles, slaw, mac and potatoe salad. My favorite by far were the ribs, tender, great taste, finger looking good. Pulled chicken was more flavorful then pork ( a little too much vinegar for my taste). Corn bread made like in the south, hardy and heavy. Local food, great. try it you might like it.

Bite Club event
Reviewed by markbvt on May 1, 2008
Thanks to Nectar's and Seven Nights for hosting the recent Bite Club event. I hadn't been to Nectar's in ages, and it was nice to be able to check out the new decor and menu. The ribs were excellent -- nicely spiced and smoky. They were my favorite item of the evening. Also good were the sliders, especially the beef ones, although all three were a bit dry and could have used more bbq sauce. The bbq chicken was too dry, and my piece at least had a slight chemical taste, as though some kerosene had inadvertently gotten into the smoker. The potato salad was pretty average -- I've had store-bought potato salad that I liked better. The cole slaw was nice and crisp, but had a citrus tang that seemed a little out of place to me. The baked beans tasted good, but seemed slightly undercooked. The macaroni salad was good, and the pasta was well-cooked -- not too mushy. The fried pickles were interesting, but not for me. I just don't like pickles much. They might have worked better with half-sour pickles; as it was they were too salty. Personally, I would have liked fried okra a lot better. As for the desserts, the maple pecan pie was quite good -- maybe slightly dry, but very tasty. Nice and buttery. I didn't care for the other desserts though. The biggest recurring issue seemed to be that much of the food was just a little too dry. Having bottles of bbq sauce on hand would alleviate this problem. Unfortunately for Nectar's, though, Big Fatty's is very stiff competition that in my opinion makes better bbq. Nectar's ribs are good, but I would have preferred to see them stick to a menu closer to their old one and just improve the quality of the food.
