Established in 1918, this in-house restaurant and full-service bakery has a menu that reflects its age. It's the place for old-fashioned comfort food.

Comfortable Food

I used to wish that there was a restaurant in Montpelier similar to those showcased on the Food Channel series "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives." Idiot, there is...the Wayside is a wonderful institution-unerringly reliable, always busy, always serving large portions of good food: great breakfasts until late in the day; a turkey club deserving knighthood, fries, cole slaw and everything one would expect from an expanded diner. The service is swift and attentive, and leaving without indulging in dessert should be a crime....

Wish it was nearer Burlington

I was a late "discoverer" to this great restaurant. Traveling for business from Burlington area I began to stop here. Each time I'd try the different daily specials, and they never disappointed. This place is the VT king of comfort food. If you're looking for "better than mama used to make" this is your place. In my top 5 in VT.

Vermontiana deluxe

Don't worry too much about the food... nothing is that great and nothing is too bad. The fun is bantering with the great gang of waitresses, trying to score extra rolls, and getting honest comments on the "specials." Always go for the special beverage, the special dinners and the special desserts... these are freshly prepared daily... not just frozen chicken breasts. I make them down on ambience only because the new lighting is horrible.

Still worth it after all these years

I first ate here when I was a student at Goddard College, some 30 years ago. Was back in the neighborhood for a reunion recently, so I decided to try it again. The decor had changed, but the fine, unpretentious food I'd come to cherish at the Wayside has not.... Long may it serve!

Value

I cannot think of any place in the Central Vermont area that gives better value for the price. While it is not 'gourmet' dining I have never been disapointed in any meal there. You walk away well fed, well served and at about 2/3 the price of other places. Can't find a better breakfast any where near the price- and its served til 4pm, too.
