Good quick taco stop

This was my first time at Mad Taco in general and I think the Montpelier location represents it well. I loved eating Mexican at a counter! The staff was friendly, funny and helpful. I ordered a simple quesadilla and was happy with the avocado inside and selection of hot sauces to accompany it. My friends ordered burritos, tacos and the fatty sandwich and everything looked fresh and filling. I thought it was reasonably priced and for a large group we were in and out quickly en route to a concert. Thanks Mad Taco!

expensive!

This is as close as you are gonna get to an authentic taco counter in a latin market, and the locally sourced meats make it a real gem! I found the flavors and the preparation top notch all the way. I have a couple of recommendations... all issued in hopes of making this a success, because it is truly a great addition to the local scene. First, it would cost just about NOTHING to include some rice & beans on the plate. Two tacos for $8 plus tax plus drink is high for a meal like this... and not even quite a meal. To expect patrons to actually pony up a bunch more dollars for something that just fills out the (lonely looking) plate is a mistake. Secondly, the name needs to change. Why would an establishment basing its business on meat-filled items ever want to create a mental association with Mad Cow disease? It is a bit disturbing... especially given that it appears that the cooking is done off-premise. Best wishes--- an enjoyable first visit, but a bit too expensive to get too excited about.

Oh Please Do Better!

As lovers of authentic Mexican flavors we've been waiting for this place to open with bated breath. I'm afraid breakfast there was a huge dissapointment. First the good: quick, polite service, lots of very spicy, flavorful sauces, good coffee. The bad: Potatoes for the misnamed "Patatas Bravas" were at least 3 days old, dry and flavorless. Eggs requested over easy were over hard. Crispy corn tortillas under the huevos rancheros were way too crispy to absorb any of the sauce. Everything overseasoned, and the price was a bit high for the product received. I have no problem paying these prices for local product if it's well prepared and flavorful, but this wasn't. Please keep trying, we need you in Montpelier, but we need you to be good!

Go, go now, stop what you're doing and GO

Mad Taco in Montpelier has finally opened. We stopped on Tuesday night after work and got an order of carnitas, colorado, and pastor tacos. All were pork with just a few different things. All were $8 (two tacos in each order). We also got a side of refried beans ($3). They have an array of like 14 sauces on the counter that you can take with you and they're mostly pretty hot, but very very tasty. We shared everything, and I loved it all. The colorado tacos had avocado on them and the meat was cooked in their colorado sauce, otherwise the tacos come with pork (a good amount of it) and onion (I ask for no cilantro, otherwise it looks like they put cilantro on everything). If you want queso or crema, that's extra. Each taco is made with two corn tortillas (I don't think they make their own but I could be wrong I didn't ask) so they stay together with no problem. I loved it. Enough that I brought home more last night. He remembered me when I came in, and they were hoppin' busy. I saw tacos lengua on the board last night ($11 for two) and got those as well as carnitas and colorado, also a side of beans, again. Total was around $32 last night. Fortunately my husband was feeling much better last night and was able to taste the tacos and try several of the sauces. He wasn't sure if they were too hot because his throat was still sore or because he didn't have anything (queso or crema) to help modify the heat, but he didn't really use them. He also loved them, though. We are in serious trouble. This place is just down the road from my husband's office. :) The pork was fabulous (though very greasy on the carnitas tacos, I didn't mind the dribbly grease one bit). It was well-cooked and lightly seasoned with a wonderful mouth-feel. The lengua tacos were brilliant, tender, flavorful, just... yum. For those of you who have been longing for a good Mexican place in the area, you got it. Get thee to Mad Taco, NOW NOW NOW! :)

Not your average taco
Reviewed by Linda_in_Vermont on February 14, 2012
At lunch the place was bustling and customers all seemed happy with their food. They serve up a variety of tasty tacos more like what I've had in Mexico. In other words, it's not your standard American taco with taco-flavored meat, cheese, and veggies on a stale tortilla. I gave it four stars because the carnitas was a bit too greasy but the flavor was divine.
