Keep walking
Reviewed by Issac Anvil on May 25, 2009
My wife and I stopped at Halverson's while walking down Church Street and don't plan to ever again. I'd suggest you walk further down to Ri Ra. We waited for at least one hour for our food (during which time a family of four was seated, served, paid, and left) and the waitress claimed the kitchen was "backed up" with orders (though our order was a simple salad and grilled cheese). When it finally arrived, the salad had some sort of disgusting Mexican dressing poured on top of molding lettuce when it was described to have been an oriental ginger dressing on the menu. I sent it back and received a less expensive house salad that was equally gross with rotten lettuce but was still charged for the oriental salad. The grilled cheese was soggy from sitting so long and the pickle was so old that it could be bent into a circle without snapping in half. I can't believe I worked for the equivalent of about 1.5 hours in order to pay for this horrible lunch. One family of three arrived, sat down and waited like we did but handed their menus back to our waitress and left without eating anything. Wish I had been as smart as they were. Do yourself a favor and follow their lead.

longing for an earlier era...

I am a frequent visitor to Halverson's and have been for years. In the beginning (sounds like a bible phrase doesn't it?) I could not get enough. The setting, items and prices were unbeatable as far as Church Street goes. Whenever my friends and I would go to dinner I would always push for Halverson's. I loved it so much I even named my dog after this establishment. However, since then the service, food and prices have fallen from the pedestal for me. The atmosphere is still great, but not as great as the beginning.

Great location

But thats about it. The service here is infamous for being horrible, yet the setting and location keep me going back. The food is bland and cheap.

Comfortable and Tasty
Reviewed by littleloopy on November 21, 2008
Halvorson's is one of my favorite Burlington restaurants. The atmosphere is comfortable, especially on a winter evening (or check out the great back patio in the summer!) and the food is tasty and dependable. I have always experienced polite and timely waitstaff, clean surroundings, and good comfortable food.

Abysmal.

This restaurant managed to deliver quite possibly the worst service I've ever had in my life. Two of my friends and I went here on my birthday this summer as sort of a first stop-just looking for some drinks and a bite to eat. Our food wasn't awful, we had baked brie(how bad can that ever be), and salads and sandwiches. Our drinks, however, we're disgusting. Yes, disgusting. Not just sub-par, not just weak(although they were that too), but certifiably undrinkable. My mojito(featured on thier drink menu)was nothing but maybe a shot of gold rum with bar mix-a whole pint glass of it. Whoever they had behind the bar was obviously inexperienced, but we tried our hardest not to be annoying about it, all having worked in the service industry at one time or another. When our waitress failed to return to our table for an extended period of time, my friend brought our drinks to the bar just to return them-when our waitress finally brought us our food, she was totally rude about it. We wanted to let her know that we had brought our drinks back so she would be in the know, basically-and we added that they were really terrible. She proceeded to say, "well, I guess you'll know not to order those here anymore." Yeah-as if we're ever going back. echh. The staff is borderline incompetent, the drinks are nasty, the food mediocre. Don't go here.

What a drag
Reviewed by wasiewas on October 13, 2008
I realize that the time between lunch and dinner, especially on a beautiful fall day, can be kind of crazy for a restaurant/bar but as a consumer I still expect to be treated fairly and respectfully. This was not the case on Oct. 12. Halverson's has always been our standard for app's and a drink, love the courtyard. But this time even though we stood by the seating station for 10 min. no one would seat us. then the hostess showed and told us we could not sit in the courtyard, sorry you had a hard day but no need to be rude, we weren't. Then though our server was sweet as could be, aparty that ordered after us got served first??? DIsappointment was had this day, too much raspberry sauce on brie, plus no silverware to eat it with. Oh well, chalk it up to the leaves falling from the tree.
