Sample Jewish deli faves – including mounds of pastrami on rye; foot-long, all-beef dogs with kraut and matzoh ball soup – without leaving Vermont. Grab some Dr. Brown's soda to swig on the side. They even have the sweet 'n' vegetal "Cel Ray." Weekend brunch.

Who knew life could be so bland?
Reviewed by AINTNUTTINBUTAGTHANG on May 20, 2010
Sunday morning we got a hankering for a hearty tasty large diner breakfast and Sadie Katz was calling our names. My fellow and I sat down without any wait at a comfortable sunny booth at around 10:30. I wondered why the downtown deli was almost empty on a sunny spring weekend at prime hangover-cure time. My mouth watered realizing every breakfast dish came with homemade Latkes, or potato pancakes. I ordered up veggie & veggie sausage Eggs Benedict, so needless to say, I was ready for a solid, delicious, rich meal. The food arrived quickly and it looked ok-disappointment begins. The potato pancake was hard on the outside and overcooked, not burnt tho. It wasn't warm either....It may have been sitting for a bit of time before it reached me. So on to the Veggie Benedict. My english muffin was hard, difficult to cut, and of cheap quality. The spinach was shredded and offered a nice full layer of veggie. The tomatoes were pale-colored and flavorless. The eggs were almost perfectly poached, a little too hard in the yolk. And the Hollandaise sauce looked rich & tempting, however when I tasted it, there was virtually no flavor, just texture. Who know you could make bland Hollandaise bland?! The only flavorful part of the entire meal was the salt I added to my Latke and the veggie sausage that was pre-made and bought for the meal. My fresh-squeezed OJ was delicious. The old style juice press that could squeeze 100 oranges in a sitting was nostalgic and enhanced the ambiance, until I realized the loud, ultra-obnoxious cranking noise that did not stop for over 15 minutes in the tiniest diner space ever, was detracting from the already bland experience. My boyfriend ate 2 pancakes, one Latke, and one scrambled egg. He smothered the bland spongey food with hot sauce, salt, and maple syrup. If you like flavor or spice, don't go to Sadie Katz. The saving grace was our attentive, kind, and hard-working waitress. Edible...but gets a Thumbs down.

Great breakfast spot

Love this place. Try the pastrami Benedict or corn beef omelet. They are two of my favorites. This place is a HUGE improvement over what the Oasis was in food and service.

The Best Sandwich In Town
Reviewed by peopleeater on January 28, 2010
A lean corned beef sandwich on rye. That's what I always get here. A hint of bread accents the massive pile of tender beef in every bite. And the bread always tastes as if it was baked that morning. Very friendly and efficient staff. Awesome setting.

Coming to Vermont 37 years ago from Westchester County and Eastern Long Island, I went through Deli withdrawal. Then finally, Sadie Katz. After we had lunch there, I thought I'd have to wait another 37 years for a good Jewish Deli. You want good Deli, try Ben & Bill's located in the newly renovated Price Chopper. The corn beef is very good and not fatty. You don't have to pay extra for "Extra Lean" it comes that way. The Rye bread is far better then Sadie's and the potato salad is perfect, not hard chunks of potato as at Sadie's . The price is far better too. The few times I was at Sadie Katz I asked for the knish, they never had any. Give the Price Chopper Jewish Deli a try, I think you'll be very pleasantly surprised.

Won't be back for breakfast...
Reviewed by anondiner1 on October 6, 2009
Let's start with what I liked about Sadie Katz - the real diner feel. It's a greasy spoon and the staff is a little rude. It's perfect on that front, like a real city diner. The food however was not so good. The coffee was full of grounds. My corned beef hash was not so much hash as a pile of fatty corned beef with the rogue potato thrown in. My english muffin was burned beyond recognition. I saw some sandwiches going out as we were leaving that looked pretty good so I may be back for lunch, but definitely not for breakfast fare again.
