Ale's Well
A "ski of beers" at The Shed Restaurant and Brewery in Stowe won't get you down Spruce Mountain. But it will lift your spirits when the waiter brings out an old wooden ski tip sporting six, four-ounce samples of the local quaff — particularly the curiously strong "mountain ale." An après-ski cliché? Maybe so, but that doesn't explain the Bob Marley tunes blasting on a summer Sunday night. Or the Jamaican red-pepper relish served with the "mighty" Shed burger — six ounces of ground chuck marinated in beer and spices and served on a Thomas' English muffin.
Mixing and matching appears to be a tradition at The Shed, which also promotes its shepherd's pie, smoked barbecue ribs and Cobb salad. If the informal atmosphere in the pub doesn't suit, there are four other dining rooms to choose from. Also touristy merch such as T-shirts, pint glasses and can coolers. The Shed does 40 percent of its business in the winter — mostly on weekends. The demand for kegs, however, is steady all year. Few eateries have had such a long run on the Mountain Road.
